01. The Philippine film 'What Lies Beneath' premiered on NetflixPH, attracting 517,456 viewers online

Broadcast and Popularity: The ABS-CBN suspense-thriller series What Lies Beneath premiered on Netflix PH and immediately topped the most popular TV shows in the Philippines, with a peak of 517,436 concurrent viewers on Kapamilya Online Live on Monday, October 20. Plot: The story revolves around four women—Alice (Janella Salvador), Mel (Sue Ramirez), Erica (Kaila Estrada), and Beth (Charlie Dizon). Fourteen years ago, they witnessed their friend Louisa (Mutya Orquia) being murdered and even testified against Aiden (Jake Cuenca). Years later, three of them pursue their dream of building a nursing home, while Erica steps away to restart her life. However, the returning Aiden vows to claim what he sees as "injustice," dragging all four back into past shadows. Audience Reception: The series' plot twists are thought-provoking and deeply explore the strength and vulnerability in female friendship amid pain, betrayal, and healing. The direction, pacing, and casting are also highly praised, with the transition from the young to present versions of the characters handled naturally. Some viewers have also commended the production quality by RCD Narratives, expressing anticipation for similar works, while lauding the actors, including the young cast Eliza Borromeo, Reich Alim, Krystal Mejes, and Allyson McBride, for their nuanced performances that convey the characters' strength, vulnerability, and genuine emotions, deepening themes of guilt, survival, and the weight of secrets. The series airs weekly on Tuesdays at 8:45 pm on Kapamilya Channel, Kapamilya Online Live (KOL), A2Z, and TV5, with early viewing available on iWant and Netflix.

02. Laotian young filmmakers use their cameras to directly address issues of human trafficking and safe migration, sparking social attention through a public service advertising competition

On 16 October, 20 teams of young Laotian filmmakers premiered their public service announcement (PSA) videos at a venue in Vientiane, focusing on urgent social issues such as human trafficking and unsafe migration. The event marked the conclusion of a national short film (PSA) competition jointly supported by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC), the National Institute of Fine Arts of Laos (NIFA), and Plan International Laos. This youth-led initiative comes at a crucial time. According to the Ministry of Labour and Social Welfare, by 2024, around 400,000 Laotians will be employed in neighbouring countries, nearly half of them without legal documentation. Coupled with unknown cases of human trafficking, this reality underscores the urgency of campaigns that are peer-driven, directly engage young people, encourage safe migration practices, and raise awareness of human trafficking risks. The PSA competition, initiated by Plan International Laos in 2019, aims to empower adolescents and youth to use film as a platform for social change. Each year, participants discuss key community issues; this year’s focus is "Human Trafficking and Safe Migration," with entrants translating these issues into relatable stories through a blend of documentary and creative approaches.
