01. Highlights of the 2025 Summer Film Market

On 6 June, the 2025 summer film schedule launch conference, organised by the National Film Administration and co-hosted by the Film Channel and the News New Media Centre of China Media Group, was successfully held in Beijing. As the longest popular period of the year, this summer season has already attracted over 60 domestic and international films to compete for release dates, drawing significant attention from the industry and audiences.

For domestic films, a wide range of genres is covered, including history, suspense, action, comedy, animation, and more, fully catering to different audience preferences. Among them, the historical film "East Pole Island" focuses on the fishermen of East Pole Island who, under the oppression of Japanese invaders, uphold the belief of "saving others in distress," rise up in resistance, and participate in a large-scale maritime international rescue. "Lychee of Chang'an" shifts the focus to the lesser-known figures of the Tang Dynasty, telling the legendary journey of a low-ranking official tasked with the special mission of delivering lychees, embarking on a challenging expedition. The animation film segment is equally compelling, including the popular online animation IP derivative "Little Monsters of Wolf Mountain," the adaptation of the classic literature work "Liaozhai: Lanruo Temple," and the continuation of the classic series "Pleasant Goat and Big Big Wolf: Exotic Dawn," offering a rich selection for young viewers this summer.

The imported film lineup is also strong, with such overseas blockbusters as "Mission: Impossible 8: Dead Reckoning," "New How to Train Your Dragon," "Jurassic World: Rebirth," and "F1: Fast Track" set to meet domestic audiences throughout the summer. Notably, "East Pole Island" announced its release date on 11 June, confirming an official premiere on 8 August, accompanied by the release of a trailer and poster. The trailer shows the fisherman brothers A Bi, played by Zhu Yilong, and A Dang, played by Wu Lei, encountering a submarine ambush while diving in seemingly calm waters. It interweaves the brutal acts of Japanese soldiers landing on the island with the tragic drowning of British prisoners of war, vividly portraying the horrors of war, while the fishermen's courage and belief in saving others amid life-and-death choices heightens the anticipation for the film.

At the launch event, the "China Film Consumption Year" series of activities was also officially announced, offering multiple cinema-friendly initiatives during the summer to provide affordable viewing options for audiences. At the same time, the nationwide "Light and Shadow Blossom China Tour" film week also officially began, boosting the enthusiasm of the summer film market.
